  • This morning when I went to check my email I noticed an iTunes receipt for an outrageous $699 purchase. I immediately contacted Apple and have verified that the email was a fake (as I had suspected).

Apparently I’m not the only one receiving these bogus emails. My support agent replied with this:

Dario, thank you for contacting the iTunes Store to ask about the iTunes Receipt email you received. A number of users have reported receiving an emailed iTunes Store invoice for purchases that they did not make. These invoices have likely not been sent by Apple or iTunes but are bogus emails intended to trick users into visiting a URL which delivers malicious software onto their computer. That email was sent by someone posing as iTunes and included links to non-Apple websites. Neither the email nor its sender are affiliated with Apple.

The images above provide a fake (first image) and a real (second image) iTunes receipt. If you use an email client that does not immediately filter out a bad or suspicious email, be aware of the differences between the two:

    1. store@itunes.com, although it appears to come by the Apple-owned domain iTunes.com, is not affiliated with Apple. Official receipts usually come from: do_not_reply@itunes.com with the subject: “iTunes Store.”
    2. If my filter hadn’t caught it, I’m sure the Apple logo would have been visible on the fake email; this does not always guarantee it is authentic.
    3. Official receipts contain a sidebar that recommends apps based on your purchase.
    4. Billing always includes your address provided in your iTunes account. The fake email only includes the email.
    5. Where it says “Billed To:” it will usually give you your Credit Card type and the last four digits, not just “Credit Card.”
    6. Apple will never give you the option to cancel an order as all app purchases are final and non-refundable.
    7. Remember Apple does charge taxes.

  • I have this issue when buying from the iTunes Store. I have my credit card all set up, with enough money to buy all Top 25 applications and songs, but I’m always very “careful” about how I spend it and on what.
I keep thinking to myself, “wait, I may use this money later.” or “I may need it tomorrow.” and I end up preventing myself from buying the things I want. But I found the solution. I think.
Get iTunes Cards! This way the money is already spent towards iTunes, and no more holding back. I’m going to buy to my heart’s content, or at least till the card finishes up. Yes, I think this will work. Hopefully.
By the way, I’ve always loved iTunes Cards designs… I may start collecting them.

  • Did you know Apple’s App Store is about to reach 25 billion downloads? That’s a lot of apps!
Not only do they have a live app downloads countdown on the Apple website, but a live countdown right inside the App Store!
Just like with the billionth downloaded app contest, Apple is ready to hand out a $10,000 iTunes card to the lucky person who downloads the 25 billionth app. If you haven’t been on the App Store in a while, make sure you check it out this week and get downloading (alternatively, you can also fill out a form if you don’t want to download anything here).
The prize may not be cash but who doesn’t want to be the privileged owner of a $10,000 item?
